Protection & Cleansing for the City of Chicago (Sarayeye) was a performance installation created for VAGINA III, presented by The Good Night Ladies at Red Tape Theatre in August 2013.
It was a durational performance, a protection and cleansing ritual, and a love poem to Chicago. The performance/ritual involved repeated physical action to achieve a trance-like state, the writing of poetry, the drawing of blood, the mixing and consumption of various herbs, and the interpretation of chance operations. The piece's subtitle is an homage to one of its sources of inspiration--sarayeye, a type of spiritual cleansing ritual in Santeria.
